If you have a loved one in a care facility of any kind, then we, at Nance Cacciatore, know that this pandemic has been especially difficult for you and your family. Not being allowed to see your loved one for an extended period of time was something that you could have never foreseen.
Making the decision to place your loved one in a care home is a difficult decision at any time, but having a loved one there during COVID-19 is even more difficult, we’re sure.
There are excellent care facilities here in Florida. After all, according to an article on prb.org posted in March 2019, Florida has the second highest percentage of residents aged 65 or older. Florida trails Maine by only 0.1%! We must take care of our elderly relatives and loved ones.
Signs of Nursing Home Neglect
You want to know that your loved one is safe while in someone else’s care. It is hard to imagine anyone taking care of them as well as you would, but sometimes this is not possible. Mostly, they need a higher level of care than you can offer, in times you can’t be there.
Concern for your loved one’s safety is completely understandable. You can’t be with them 24 hours a day. While most care facilities are doing an excellent job, we know that there are those that need to do better. Here are some signs to look out for in your loved one:
- Bed sores, or decubitus ulcers
- Malnutrition
- Dehydration
- Broken bones or bruises from falls
- Dirt bedding or clothing
- Excessive use of restraints
- Over medication
Tips on Keeping an Eye On Them
If your loved one is capable of using technology, then we suggest giving them a phone, tablet, or computer on which you can video chat with them. This can be used, not just during the pandemic but for as long as they are able to use it.
You can ask them to show you their room, their bedding, their clothes, and even their arms and legs to make sure that everything is clean and they are unharmed. COVID-19 does not get to steal your sense of peace regarding your loved one’s well-being!
